Magnolia Electric Company (formerly Songs: Ohia) at the Tokyo Rose - I've seen Jason Molina twice before and this was my best experience with him. The fact that he actually had a band backing him made his whole set a lot more energetic, powerful and moving. At Fest Full of Rock last Spring his solo performance was quite depressing, but his band seemed to keep him in a much more cheery mood. They joked and laughed and produced some awesome jams. I missed the opening band Spokane, but I heard they were good.

Q and Not U at The Black Cat - I love Q and Not U. I can say nothing bad about them. They rocked out to a hometown crowd and I danced like crazy. Their new album is quite amazing and the songs on it do not disappoint live. They are packed with an even greater energy. They ran the favorites off of all three albums. It was a huge party and I don't know how anyone could have had anything less than a wonderful time.
Food for Animals - I've seen these guys open for Q and Not U twice. and they are awesome! Awesome! Hip-hop with experimental noisy beats and an charismatic MC.
Manhunter - These guys sequence, twist knobs and make one awesome dance party happen while doing so.

of montreal, the late bp helium show review:

the late bp helium - pretty good rock that was really just the of montreal line-up with a different singer
of montreal - they put on a really good show. someone described their sound as "skipping with gnomes." i hadn't heard their most recent record, but based on the songs they played i'm sure it is pretty awesome. these guys never stop bringing to melody and the pop. midway through their set they broke into a skit in which they all moved in slow motion, hitting each other with instruments and such, all to a noisy background track. it was very...artistic. and awesome. they also used kazoos and had one of their members pretend to tap dance. the huge crowd helped up the energy level and everyone seemed to be having fun. hooray.

les savy fav-if you haven't seen les savy fav live, i pity your feeble existence. you have not lived until you have danced around to their awesome tunes and watched tim harrington go absolutely crazy on stage. this show was just another les savy fav show, which means it was fucking incredible. there was drunkenness, there was nudity, there was crowd participation. oh god it was great.

detachment kit- man, these guys sucked. i was really disappointed because i'd heard good things about them.

The Fingerpainters - Awesome rock from right here at UVA. These guys covered a lot of sonic ground in their set. Pavement and Weezer come to mind, but they also pushed the boundaries more with some more noisy, experimental songs. These guys should be playing a lot around Charlottesville in the future so don't miss them.

A Day in Black and White - These guys were loud and fun. I'm not that into the kind of music they play, but it was enjoyable nonetheless. It was entertaining to see the confused faces of all of the first year students as they walked by Maury Hall on their way home from the hypnotist.

The Out-Circuit - Very smart, subtle, and interesting rock from DC. These guys are obviously experienced musicians because they pull off really intricate and beautiful songs. It was kind of disappointing that the crowd thinned out a bit during their set, because they really put on a good show.

The first movie of the Offscreen season plays this Sunday in the Newcomb Theatre. It's called The Saddest Music in the World, and here's the description that they provide:

Set in Depression-era Winnipeg, Guy Maddin's The Saddest Music in the World is a surrealist musical about the Beer Baroness Lady Port-Huntly (Isabella Rossellini) who announces a contest to find the saddest music in the world, offering the prize of $25,000 and a collection of frozen tears. Also be sure to make the drive up to DC on Sept 9th to see Les Savy Fav, because it's always worth the drive to see these guys.

Show reviews:

Gone Dead Train- These guys, hailing from Staunton, play some pretty nice country. Not shitty country. Good, classic, intellegent country.
Pterodactyl- AWESOME. AWESOME. These guys were totally wasted during their entire set, but it didn't matter at all because they fucking ruled. Please go see them if they ever come your way. Plus, they are from Brooklyn. AWESOME.
Superfriends- Somewhat reminiscent of Dinosaur Jr. Good, talented guitar work. Melodic and fun. Yay.

VHS & The Babies- I missed them because I had to work, but I heard their set was very good.
Field Machine- Decent rock, tinged with some emo-ish aspects, from DC. The lead singer/keyboardist had a very nice voice.
Folkskunde- This was their last show. I assume they are going to college. They should not go to college. They should immediately begin touring the country and spreading their catchy, uplifting mix of classic and indie rock. Their set wasn't as energetic as previous ones, probably due to the fact that all of their parents were their taking pictures and being proud of their young, rocking children. But still, I'll always remember Folkskunde. And maybe they'll get back together sometime.

If you missed Mission of Burma when they came to the 9:30 club this summer, you will have a chance to see them at the (much cooler club) Black Cat on October 14th. Part of a MoB song was used in the recent remake of the Manchurian Candidate. Here's a quote from their site:

10 seconds of the Burma track "Trem II" is used in the film in the scene where Denzel is with a Germanic doctor and is getting shock treatment. Listen carefully because the first half of those 10 seconds is muffled by screaming monkeys.

There will be no screaming monkeys on October 14th, so go let these guys prove to you that they can still rock.

Tomorrow Q and not U is playing in DC at the Different Kind of Dude Fest. I wish I could make it up in time for the events that take place before the show, but unfortunately I can't. If your free you should check out both the music and the various workshops.

September is beginning to look like a good month at the Tokyo Rose. It turns out that only two days before the Mt. Eerie/Calvin Johnson show, Of Montreal is coming. Mark your calendars! September 21st. Go here to read the Pfork review of their latest album.

Also, come to the Tokyo Rose on August 20th and be prepared to dance your motherfucking ass off, because Gavin Holland, one of the best DJs in town, will be spinning. Don't miss it.

And, I just noticed more details on Pixies' dates in December.

-Dec. 6th - Norfolk, VA @ Constant Convocation Center (with the Datsuns and the Bennies)
-Dec. 7th - Washington, DC @ Constitution Hall (with the Datsuns and the Bennies)
-Dec 8th - Washington, DC @ Constitution Hall (with TV on the Radio and the Bennies)

Also worthy of note is the second NYC date (Dec 13th) with Mission of Burma. What a bill! If you have the money and time (I probably won't) it would be worth it to make to trip. It would be incredibly hard to beat seeing these two legendary bands, both riding the wave of a successful reunion. But think quick: tickets for this date go on sale TODAY (August 11th) at noon EST.

I'm still unsure of when the Norfolk and DC tickets will go on sale...

Show Review: Palomar, The Smittens, VHS & The Babies

Last Friday night my friend and I headed to the Tokyo Rose to check out this bill of indie pop acts.

The evening began with Charlottesville's own VHS & The Babies, who didn't suck as much as I remembered from seeing them previously. They played a Pavement-ish pop that has the possibility of sounding good on an album (they just released one, I haven't heard it), but live it isn't much fun.

Next up were The Smittens from Vermont. They'd just come from the Popfest in Athens, GA, and I'm sure they fit in there perfectly. They are a completely over-the-top indie pop group, complete with too sweet pop melodies and childish lyrics. The highlight of their set were the lyrics "We like stripes, we like stars, but not on every single car." Their keyboardist/singer sounded very similar to Stephin Merritt of The Magnetic Fields. They were decent, but really too poppy for my taste.

Palomar, hailing from Brooklyn, finished out the evening with a bang, and left me satisfied. Comprised of three girls and a guy drummer, their live set revealed that they have much better pop sensibilities than either of the opening bands. The vocal melodies were smart (but fun), served with energy and punch, and intricate, since all of the members help out with singing. But don't trust me. Check out their sound here.

Monday night I went to the Tokyo Rose to see Cex, Make Believe and Fallout Countdown:

Fallout Countdown: Half fun dance-punk beats, half angular very-DC post-punk. When they asked the audience how they sounded, one guy shouted out "Angular!" See them if you get a chance.

Make Believe: Uh, these guys are obviously very talented, especially the guitarist. But all in all they were pretty boring. Maybe if they took themselves a little less seriously I would be less critical.

Cex: I like Cex. He's a cool guy who knows his knobs. Having a drummer and some of Make Believe on stage with him turned the show into a fun, inspirational, atypical jam.

The new Ted Leo/Rx album, Shake the Sheets, has been leaked. You can Soulseek it if you want, but remember to buy the record when it comes out in October.

Experimental genius composer Philip Glass is going on a short tour, and he's coming to College Park, MD. Don't miss this chance to see him. Here's what TMT has to say about it:

I recommend you go check out Napoleon Dynamite. It's a quirky and humorous film, and it's playing downtown at the Regal Cinema. Watch the trailer, but don't expect quite as much as it promises.

Last Thursday two of my friends and I headed up to Fort Reno Park in DC to see Ted Leo and the Pharmacists. It was quite an awesome show. I even googled up some pictures of the evening, including a quite hilarious picture of a Ted posing with a guy and a girl. Pics are from unrequited narcissism. His new songs rock. We missed the opening band, The Evens (Ian MacKaye's new band), but heard the sad news that Ian's mom Ginger MacKaye recently passed away. Dischord's mailing list:

Mary Anne "Ginger" MacKaye passed away early Wednesday morning surrounded by her family after a long battle with lung disease. Ginger is survived by her husband, Bill, her five children, Katharine, Susannah, Ian, Alec and Amanda, a grand-daughter, Ava and two daughter-in-laws, Lely Constantinople and Kirsten Lindquist.

Ginger MacKaye was a lifelong D.C. resident and a prolific correspondent. Ginger will be remembered both as the matriarch of a wonderful family and as the foster mother and tireless advocate for generations of punk kids who found in the MacKaye household the supportive and safe haven that many could not find in their own homes. Over the years, scores of fans hoping to visit Dischord House instead found themselves meeting Ginger at 3819 Beecher Street. Ian was still living at home back in 1980 when the label began, and we still use his parents' house as our official mailing address. The visitors may have come hoping to meet one of their punk icons, but after a brief chat and maybe a glass of iced tea, few left disappointed.

A service will be held at St. Stephens and the Incarnation Church at 16th and Newton Sts, NW Washington, DC on Saturday morning at 10:30 am. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to the Church of Saint Stephen and the Incarnation-Wendt Plaza Fund

FWIW, UVA is having it's Midsummer Music at the outdoor theatre (it's not a fucking amphitheatre! amphitheaters are circular!). Quogue, Hobsons Choice, and Politicks are playing... There's free Big Jim's BBQ while it lasts, so get there early and eat before you go out and get drunk.

Today I went with a couple friends to see the first showing of Michael Moore's Fahrenheit 9/11 at Vinegar Hill. I enjoyed the movie. Moore's done a good job again, though I think Bowling for Columbine is still his best work. See the trailer here.

In DC news, Travis Morrison, the cocky, charismatic singer of the late Dismemberment Plan made it into Entertainment Weekly for his acoustic cover of Ludacris' "What's Your Fantasy?" EW calls it "as frenetic as the original. Still, we doubt it'll get as much play in the strip clubs." Pitchfork bashed it, but have your own fucking opinion. Download it.

When The Going Gets Tough, The Tough Get Karazzee!!

Last night my friend and I headed up Rt. 29 to see the !!! (pronounced chk chk chk) show at the Black Cat. White Magic weren't a good opening band for !!! at all. They played piano/bass/drums rock that sounded interesting at times but mostly just made me sleepy (not a good way to warm up for !!! at all).

!!! came on pretty early, as White Magic was the only opening band and it was a Sunday night show. But they got the crowd moving as if it was much later in the night. At first the crowd was only half into getting down, but as they played such booty-shaker hits as "Pardon My Freedom" (I don't give a fuck/I don't give a shit about that shit) and "Me and Guiliani Down By The Schoolyard (A True Story)." Things really got good when the lead singer said they would play more only if every one danced. And everyone did. Tired and drenched in sweat, we left when the show ended, at about 12, and headed back home. It was definitely one of the better shows that I've been to, largely because of the dancing. I'd recommend you catch !!! the next time they swing by.

Well, you may not have to many options this weekend, but...

HOLY FUCKING SHIT! Ted Leo is playing the Fort Reno summer concert series in DC! And they are playing with Ian MacKaye's new band The Evens.

Also, go see the Carlsonics kick off Fort Reno. It will be worth your while.

The Station Agent is playing at the Jefferson Theatre on the Downtown Mall. A great movie, and for only 3 bucks. Get to it.

(Pt. I was the Broken Social Scene/Stars show a little while back)

Last night Tom and I headed to The Black Cat in DC to check out the Unicorns, Arcade Fire and Death From Above.

Death From Above: A bassist and a drummer. The bassist extracted some utterly awesome sounds from his instrument, running it through two 810 cabs and making it sound like a three or four guitars at points. The only thing that they could have improved on was their vocals, which didn't add much to the performance.

Arcade Fire: Make note, these guys are going to be big. They have signed to Merge Records, and when their album comes out on September 3rd, be ready. They blend wonderful melodies with powerful, shouting sing alongs, and their charisma on stage is excellent

The Unicorns: Despite the drunk girl in front of me who kept backing into me, talking to her friend during songs, and yelling stupid things like "I love Donald Rumsfeld," The Unicorns still rocked my world. The new songs they played were very promising, and I look forward to their next release. I really wished they had played an encore, but their set was awesome enough to suffice.
